Printer Sets (Setup Guide)

This article will give you all the information needed to setup and configure Printer Sets.

Summary

The Printer Sets feature enables restaurant managers to assign orders and items to printers assigned to working stations based on pre-defined configurations and sale type filtering.  This feature facilitates load balancing through smart printer management while empowering staff to enable/disable printers effortlessly through the POS.

Printer Sets are designed to enhance efficiency and productivity by reducing dependency on the KMS, enabling load balancing, and simplifying printer setup and configurations.

The product overview article for Printer Sets can be found here.

Prerequisites

To utilise Printer Sets, the following versions are required.  It is supported for Polygon POS installations only.
  • Polygon POS Management: 2311.29.1 or later
  • Polygon POS Terminal: 2312.1.2 or later

Security Role to Program Printer Sets

To access and program Printer Sets in the Polygon POS Management database, users must be assigned a security security role with the following permission granted:

Polygon POS Management | Main Menu Permissions | Products | Printer Sets

You can learn more about Application Security Roles here.

Creating a Printer Set

Printer Sets are utilised to create configuration profiles based on Sale Type filtering and Category assignment for use with the peripherals in your POS Network.  They are only available to users with a Polygon POS installation at the store.

Printer Sets are configurable only in a HQ database, and will flow to Partner databases to be available for assignment on peripherals.

A Printer Set enables both Sale Type filtering to be applied to production output, and category assignment for production devices to be applied at a HQ level.

Once created, ensure you send an update to the enterprise so that the Printer Sets will be available in the partner databases.

The detailed instructions for creating a Printer Set can be found here.

Assigning a Printer Set to a Production Peripheral

Now that the Printer Sets have been programmed, they can be assigned to production peripherals in the POS Network.

You can see the instructions for assigning a Printer Set to a Production device here.

You can:

  • Assign a single printer set
(only production jobs that match the sale type and category assignment from this printer set will be allocated to the peripheral)
  • Assign multiple printer sets
(if a production job matches against the sale type | category assignment combinations for any of the assigned printer sets it will be allocated to the peripheral)
  • Do not assign a printer set
(production jobs will be allocated to this peripheral based only on the category assignment of the peripheral)

Round-Robin Printing

What is round-robin printing?  This is how you can have the POS load balance production jobs that match the same printer set criteria across multiple devices.

It is especially useful if you have two production lines and want the jobs equally allocated to each - eg, job 1 line 1, job 2 line 2, job 3 line 1, job 4 line 2 etc.

If round-robin printing is enabled, the POS will load balance the production jobs across any production devices with a printer set assignment that matches the job.

Enabling Round-Robin Printing

To enable round-robin printing you need to:

  • Access POS Location Settings (or Default Location Settings, as appropriate)
  • Navigate to POS Terminal Settings | Printing | Production Output
  • Ensure the setting Enable printer set round-robin behaviour is turned on.

round-robin printing

Note:  If you have multiple printers that have the same printer set assigned and round-robin printing is NOT enabled, a production job that matches the printer set criteria will be allocated to each printer.

You can see how to access the POS Location Settings in Polygon POS Management here.
